Welcome to the British Inflammation Research Association

At the British Inflammation Research Association, we believe that the best science comes from keen researchers who wish to keep up with the latest and best in research in informal social settings. BIRAs has dedicated itself for 30 years to organising affordable meetings — as well as being a member of the International Association of Inflammation Societies (IAIS) providing the environment  to make their collaborations a reality and for lifelong friendships.

With the 13th World Congress of Inflammation in 2017, means BIRAs has now organised three IAIS World Congresses in the UK.

Upcoming Microbiome Meeting

Meeting 23rd September 2025

The immune system and microbiome have evolved together over millions of years - each shaping the other in terms of adapting our physiology to the environment. In recent years as our knowledge of the many different tissue microbiomes has grown and our understanding of the immune system increased, we’ve began to understand that our microbiome can profoundly affect our health and wellbeing. Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases can be triggers and exacerbated by some microbes in the microbiome and conversely dampened and controlled by others. The symposia will seek to showcase exciting new areas of research that are unravelling our relationship with our microbiomes and highlight new avenues for therapeutic intervention.
